After using hints, some windows in Hyprland have become unresponsive—they are visible but act like read-only. You cannot interact with them, type, or focus, though other windows work fine.

In the provided image, you can switch to the window on the left but cannot type or focus on it.

You might have a hints session still running when this happens. So to explain what is going on: when hints runs it overlays a transparent window over your focused window (the window hints was called on). And then that window takes over input to listen for keypresses. It also hides your mouse when hovering over the window (so that the mouse does not obscure hints).

So if you have hints running (maybe in scroll mode) you won't see any hints, but also won't be able to interact with that window. So you can try pressing escape to see if you get your window back. Maybe try it a few times to see if you might have a few instances running.

At some point we might want to add an indicator that hints is running if this becomes an issue.

Intersting, I wonder how we can recreate this. Hints works well for my on Hyprland. So there must be something specific about your setup that is causing the problem.

Can you post your config for:

• Hints

Maybe that will be sufficient to recreate.

This tool is critical to my workflow and an essential part of my daily environment.

I’m currently using it by first running the following command:

hintsd &

Then, I’ve configured a keybinding:

bind = SUPER, x, exec, /home/sj/.local/bin/hints

I’m using the default hints configuration without any modifications.

I might have a similar problem.

If I run hints scroll mode more than once, pressing escape will end one process, but the others will remain running, and pressing escape again does nothing.

I have a bind that runs `

`, which is the only way (other than going to another TTY and killing hints there)

I just installed Hints in Cachyos with KDE and had a similar problem. All apps freezed and I couldn't click or interact with anything. This happend when I used Hints for the first time in Mailspring (the AUR version not flatpak) and it opened a window asking to give Hints permission to take screenshots and I accidentally pressed ESC denying permission and everything froze even when I pressed ESC again to stop Hints. All windows opened at that moment were not responding. I managed to open a new terminal that was not freezed and killed the Hints process regaining control.
Then I had to solve the problem of how to make Hints prompt the permission for taking screenshot dialog again in KDE (there were no option for this in the Security -> Application Permissions tab). I found this solution in Reddit that cleans all of the permissions and it worked.
