WSL compatibility

@PanosMich to be honest didn't try latest version on WSL2 but the earlier version of the cli was working fine on WSL2 with usbipd

@PanosMich can you try installing apt install python3-usb it should install libusb as a dependency

I did that and got:

Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree... Done
Reading state information... Done
python3-usb is already the newest version (1.2.1-2).
python3-usb set to manually installed.
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 153 not upgraded.

sdwire still returns the same errors.

is it any different in WSL2? (I dont have a windows machine handy so I cant really test)

oh @PanosMich I just realized that I might ask something silly earlier with

@PanosMich can you try installing apt install python3-usb it should install libusb as a dependency

I am not entirely sure but with WSL1 it might be trying to use windows subsystems directly so you might need to install libusb in windows, pyusb relies on libusb, can you try to install it and make sure pyusb works fine on windows? Please refer this: https://github.com/pyusb/pyusb

Tried WSL1, it does not seem to work. Microsoft says that it does not support USBs.
Tried VMware with Ubuntu Server 25.04, couldn't even get "sudo apt install python3-sdwire" to execute without errors.
Tried VMware with Ubuntu Server 24.04.2 LTS, software installs fine, but the device does not seem to switch.
Tried WSL2 with usbipd. The sdwire switch commands do not work, as the device seems to be stack to target mode. However, if these are ignored, the usbipd attach / detach commands from the windows command prompt are enough. If the device is attached to the WSL2, then it works in target mode. If the device is detached from the WSL2, then it works in host mode.

@PanosMich please run the command with “sudo” like “sudo sdwire switch …“ PPA only have the package for noble, if you want it on different release then use the pip to install the app but keep in mind that app requires sudo to manipulate USB as of today
