Would it be possible to make the border display of the active workspace in the application grid optional? For example, being able to choose between the current style and the vanilla GNOME style, which highlights the active workspace, making it slightly larger than the others.

It's not about style, V-Shell uses the same workspace thumbnails in both the window picker and the app grid. In vanilla GNOME, the thumbnails are hidden in the app grid view and replaced with the workspaces from the window picker view.
