Hi all, I've now tried this twice with the same outcome, both times it knackered my ZigBee connection.

I just can't understand how updating the to this version messed everything up.

Ok what i meant to say it was all working fine on version 2.10.1, then it updated to the latest version and it all went to shit !!!, i then proceeded to remove the whole thing, to reflash the MR4U etc, so at the time i sent the logs i was possibly back at version 2.10.1 and it wasnt working.
So then I followed the exact thing that SMLIGHT sent to me and it all started to work straight off again, so today i thought ill give the new 2.11.0 another go and guess what it knackered it all up again !!

@osky-media The file you were given serves to clear the adapter's memory (factory reset basically). It's a bit drastic as a first step, especially in this context (the Z2M update should have no bearing on possible memory corruption in the adapter - particularly if it wasn't even able to connect back to it like it appears).

At first glance, I can see two possible sources:

• something in the core firmware negatively affected the Zigbee chip when Z2M restarted post-update - long shot
• the adapter somehow ended up in bootloader mode, and the flashing actions taken had the side-effect of taking it back out of bootloader mode.

Can you confirm the sequence of events? Just "2.10.1 running>stop z2m>update>start z2m>error"?
Can you confirm the startup always fails after update to 2.11.0, even if you flash that file? (It's not clear from your message if you immediately reverted to 2.10.1 without trying with 2.11.0.)
Can you provide the logs from 2.11.0, so we can make sure the behavior is the same as log above?
Can you provide the logs in the SMLight UI around the time of the update as well?

@Nerivec I’ll start from the top. I’m generally pretty comfortable with this stuff — I’ve been a computer consultant for over 35 years — so I wasn’t exactly expecting a simple Home Assistant update to completely torpedo the setup to the point where I had to reflash the SMLIGHT.

I’ve been running Home Assistant for around two years with very few issues. The odd hiccup here and there, nothing out of the ordinary. This particular meltdown, however, happened while I was out doing the weekly Aldi run. Naturally, that was the exact moment everything decided to fall over, and the guests weren’t overly impressed when the lights didn’t magically switch on as they walked in. Timing couldn’t have been better.

Anyway, everything was fine until I updated to 2.11.0. After that, I got the error showing in HA. I spent a good few hours tinkering — reflashing, retrying, generally questioning my life choices — but couldn’t get it working again. That was until SMLIGHT provided their exact recovery procedure. Followed it, and everything sprang back to life instantly.

At that point, I thought, “Right, surely that was just a one-off.” After all, an update shouldn’t be messing with hardware behaviour. So, against my better judgement, I ran the update again… and it broke in exactly the same way.

I didn’t grab fresh logs the second time around since the error was identical to the first.

Soon as i update to the last Z2M it fails, i have to reflash to get it to work again and take it back to the earlier Z2M

@Nerivec So i ran in to the same errors with a sonoff dongle PMG24. After the upgrade i got the same logs as above. When i reboot Zigbee2mqtt 2.11.0 without rebooting the dongle i get this error log:

I'm running firmware 9.01 version and before i switched from factory to your build i did a clear nvm3 flash.

@osky-media what HA version are you currently running? If 2026.5.0 or 2026.5.1, update to latest (these two have a bug).

@Snacks-83 I don't think that's the same problem, just same symptom (the two adapters are very different).

That points to the adapter being in bootloader mode (unplug/replug takes it out).
Could be something else on your machine that's trying to open the same port too.
Can you set log_level to debug so we have better details?

Nothing's changed in the adapter startup handling in Z2M for a long while, so it must be a side-effect of some kind.

Maybe something about the /dev/serial/by-id/ path not being available (unplug/replug would repopulate this stuff)?
dev/tty* paths aren't recommended because they aren't stable, but run a test with it, to see if it works better (/dev/ttyUSB0). You can also compare to a start after unplug/replug (that works), see if there is a difference in the above log line I copied ("Connected devices").

The second device is in use for Open Thread. I just plugged the device into my Raspberry Pi5 and the dongle got a /dev/tty* path. To be honest, I don't know how to change that. I also did a start after a unplug/repllug, but the path are the same:

Yes that's normal. In most systems, they get both a /dev/tty* (not stable) and a /dev/serial/by-id/... (stable) paths, but some systems are tricky. That's why I suggested trying the /dev/ttyUSB0 temporarily in the Z2M config, to see if something might be up with the other path.

Can you provide the logs from a couple minutes and up to the ERROR_EXCEEDED_MAXIMUM_ACK_TIMEOUT_COUNT line (the stuff right before what you posted)? Looks like something might be causing problems there. Also try to get the logs for that same period from the SMLight UI.
Any chance you updated the core firmware (v3.3.3.dev1) on the adapter recently?

No, it doesn't, must have just been a coincidence, it all a happened at the same time, there may have been two updates that i pressed at the time, me thinking it was just the same one that hadnt taken.

Just looked now, yes i think that must have updated to the latest dev 1 update for the core on the Adaptor !!!

You might want to try that yes. Silabs adapters are known to throw this error when something isn't working quite right (too slow, resource spikes, etc.); could be the update introduced a problem in the core firmware (happened a while back in another smlight core update). I haven't seen any report of this with that version yet, but triggers can be very specific, so, might not affect all.

The second device is in use for Open Thread. I just plugged the device into my Raspberry Pi5 and the dongle got a /dev/tty* path. To be honest, I don't know how to change that. I also did a start after a unplug/repllug, but the path are the same:

@Snacks-83 did you try downgrading to 2.10.1? If it's the firmware, both versions should have same problem.
You can always try clearing the NVM and re-flashing the firmware on top, but I doubt that's the issue (if it was a corruption of some kind, it likely wouldn't work after just unplug/replug).

Did you try re-installing Z2M just in case? (make sure to backup/restore your data)

@Nerivec I did not try to downgrado Z2M. I have tried to clear NVM and did install the firmware on top, but indeed as you said, that is not the issue. I haven't re-installed Z2M. I'll give that a try.
