FEATURE REQUEST: API to update fields included on accounts at creation time

I created an account to use for the voting module which contains a property called "data". I am using this to provide additional search capabilities and to provide an additional means of associating the account with the voting issue. I would like to provide the ability to update the contents of that "data" field without affecting the name or any other fields besides "modified".
