Copyright (C) 2024 Project516 and contributors
This project is licensed as a whole under the GNU Affero General Public
License, version 3 or later (AGPL-3.0-or-later). See LICENSE at the
repository root for the full license text.
Project516/ffmpeg.wasm is a fork of ffmpegwasm/ffmpeg.wasm, which was
originally released under the MIT license by Jerome Wu and contributors. That
MIT notice is kept, unmodified, at LICENSES/MIT-ffmpegwasm.txt, as required by
the MIT license's own terms. Relicensing the wrapper code to AGPL-3.0-or-later
is permitted because MIT allows sublicensing and relicensing of derivative
works, provided the original copyright notice and license text travel with
the distribution; that is what LICENSES/MIT-ffmpegwasm.txt is for.
Why the core packages are AGPL-3.0-or-later
--------------------------------------------
@project516/ffmpeg-wasm-core and @project516/ffmpeg-wasm-core-mt embed FFmpeg
built with --enable-gpl, plus the third-party libraries listed below. FFmpeg's
own project states that building with --enable-gpl changes its effective
license from LGPL-2.1-or-later to GPL-2.0-or-later (https://ffmpeg.org/legal.html).
Every GPL-licensed library this project links in is licensed "or later," not
GPLv2-only, so combining them with this project's AGPL-3.0-or-later code is
permitted: GPLv3 section 13 and AGPLv3 section 13 each grant explicit
permission to combine a covered work with code licensed under the other, and a
work licensed "GPL-2.0-or-later" already carries permission to be used under
GPLv3 terms. The wasm binaries in the core packages are therefore distributed
as a whole under AGPL-3.0-or-later.
FFmpeg is never configured with --enable-nonfree, and no library with a
GPL-incompatible license (such as fdk-aac) is linked in, so the core binaries
are redistributable.
Corresponding source
---------------------
- This repository is the corresponding source for this project's own code
(the TypeScript wrapper, the build scripts, and the JS glue in src/bind).
- FFmpeg and each third-party library below are built from the pinned
versions and upstream URLs in Dockerfile and build/*.sh in this repository.
Their own corresponding source is each project's own upstream repository at
the tag or commit pinned there.
