Thermocycler.get_hold_time should raise an error when no protocol is running

From my understanding a protocol is a set of instructions split in stages and steps, and a profile is an instance of a protocol running on a machine? First of all--is this understanding right?

I am seeing that in the thermocycling resource we check is_profile_running using hold > 0, should we then have error handling in the is_profile_running function? As far as I can tell there's no other way to know if a profile is running

we currently use protocol and profile interchangeably, we should unify that and just use one term. I like protocol. I don't think we need a difference between an instantiation and a "class", everything can be an instance.
