📖 How We Got Here

As many of you know, the original project by @juergenH87 was an incredible foundation but unfortunately became unmaintained. This fork was born directly out of the community's need to keep the library alive, stable, and evolving (see the original discussion in juergenH87/python-can-j1939#117).

Our goal is to ensure this project remains production-ready for vehicle gateways, ECU simulators, fleet diagnostics, and test harnesses.

This is a community-driven effort, and we need your help. Whether you want to review Pull Requests, triage bugs, maintain documentation, or write code, your contributions are highly welcome.

We are actively working toward establishing clear community guidelines, contribution rules, and custom templates (e.g., for bug reports, feature requests, and structured discussion categories). If you have ideas on how to better structure this project or want to step up as a maintainer, please let us know!

• Ask Questions: Stuck on address claiming, transport protocols (BAM/RTS-CTS), or DM14/DM15 memory access? Ask the community.

Hi everyone! I’m Raúl, a Senior Embedded Software Engineer and Field Application Engineer currently working at Proemion, a company specializing in industrial connectivity and telematics solutions.

At Proemion, we use python-can-j1939 to simulate customer machine behaviour and validate E2E our telematics configurations. We run our test in CI runners based on raspberry PIs.
