Why is this called sans serif?

That's a fair observation! The font is actually a port of MS Sans Serif, the bitmap font used in Windows 95, which is indeed classified as sans-serif by Microsoft, despite having some letterforms that can look slightly serif-like at certain sizes due to the bitmap pixel rendering.
The name comes directly from the original font name: "MS Sans Serif". So "sans-serif" in the repo name refers to that heritage, not a typographic description of what you're seeing rendered on screen. The font's bitmap nature can make some characters appear to have small "feet" at low resolutions, which might be confusing.

Looking into the sources folders, e.g. https://github.com/React95/R95-Sans-serif/tree/main/sources/10pt, I see the original font is indeed MS Serif_10.fnt (without the word “Sans”), but the converted one is called R95 Sans serif 10.ttf.

You're both absolutely right, and I really appreciate you catching that. The font name is wrong. Aside from that, I'm aware the font itself still isn't quite where it should be.

If either of you would be interested in collaborating, I'd love the help. Whether it's correcting the naming, improving the glyphs, or both, any contribution would be greatly appreciated. 🙏

I might be able to work on getting everything refreshed myself, but it will take some time and I can't commit to a timeline just yet.
