Dark appearance settings are not persisted

What happened?

I changed the appearance settings to dark mode, but the app always switches back to light mode when I close and reopen it.

Steps to reproduce

1. Change the appearance mode in the settings
2. Close and reopen the app

Expected behavior

The app should retain the selected appearance setting (dark mode) after being closed and reopened.
