Programmatic control of row wrap/truncate/scroll

I'd like to style how the items are rendered - in particular, the default is to wrap the entry text, but depending on the situation I'd like to truncate (with ellipses and, perhaps, mouse hover for the full text) or allow horizontal scrolling.

Sorry that I have not commented this after I refactored the items from not being check boxes, which happened actually already while back. The primary reason for the change was to optimize the performance. But actually it helps with this question too. I have not added Java API or theme variant for this. I think theme variant could be the most appropriate way to do it, as I envision it is fully doable with CSS. The text is wrapped by default styles, but if you want elipsis instead it could be the following:
