Support for Insect OR Annotation – Custom HMM Profile?

Hi,

I am interested in using Genome2OR for annotating olfactory receptors (ORs) in insects.
Currently, the provided HMM profiles focus on vertebrate species.

Is it possible to build a custom HMM profile for annotating ORs in insects using Genome2OR?
If so, do you have any guidelines or recommendations on how to generate such an HMM profile?

Hi Gaorui, Thank you for your interest in Genome2OR! Genome2OR is designed to annotate olfactory receptor (OR) genes based on species-specific characteristics. You can indeed build a custom HMM profile using the hmmbuild tool from HMMER to facilitate this process. However, there is an important prerequisite to consider. Genome2OR is primarily based on the characteristics of chordate ORs, which are G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) and highly conserved within their family. As far as I know, insect ORs function as ion channels rather than GPCRs, which means that Genome2OR may not be well-suited for annotating them directly. That said, you could modify Genome2OR’s code to better accommodate the unique characteristics of insect ORs.
