Pains:

  • can’t gather proper analytics off of it because of all of the backend stuff behind the pretty front is shitty
  • no organic flow that explains in a clear and succinct way the idea of the app
  • feel of the website lacks personality, which is really important when you first come in contact with a company/product
  • different parts: design, copywriting, coding
  • intrinsic feeling of overpaying
  • any time you outsource technical tasks (websites, app dev, etc), it's really sort of a dice roll as far as if your money will be well spent or not, or even if what they are charging is reasonable. All you can do really is whatever due diligence you can and compare prices among vendors, and hope for the best.
  • It doesn’t add up because they did a half ass job
  • A lot of website designers won't do your text copy - they'll expect you to provide your own or pay extra.
  • Artwork is bloody expensive - if they'd hired an artist to draw or a photographer to take photos, that would have chewed through much of your budget before they even looked at anything else.
I had a client who gave us branding guidelines, color pallets, fonts and everything, and we still needed a designer. That project cost ran around $20k just for reference.
