From cfafca0a7448add74c7ce7cb645ed7d869a7dd87 Mon Sep 17 00:00:00 2001 From: acoliver Date: Sat, 5 Sep 2026 15:13:35 -0300 Subject: [PATCH] Stop tracking tmp/ scratch output and ignore the directory Commit e675674 accidentally tracked three scratch files: an automated code-review dump of this repository's own PR #66, its empty stderr companion, and a commit message draft. These are artifacts of the review and commit workflow rather than source, so they do not belong in version control. tmp/ is where local verification output is written, and the ignore rules covered *.log and logs/ but not this directory, which is how the files slipped in. A tmp/ rule prevents the same accident from recurring. The files remain on disk, now untracked. --- .gitignore | 1 + tmp/commitmsg.txt | 16 -- tmp/ocr-pr66/review.json | 468 ------------------------------------- tmp/ocr-pr66/review.stderr | 0 4 files changed, 1 insertion(+), 484 deletions(-) delete mode 100644 tmp/commitmsg.txt delete mode 100644 tmp/ocr-pr66/review.json delete mode 100644 tmp/ocr-pr66/review.stderr diff --git a/.gitignore b/.gitignore index e871815..53028d5 100644 --- a/.gitignore +++ b/.gitignore @@ -65,6 +65,7 @@ Cargo.lock.bak # Logs *.log logs/ +tmp/ # Test artifacts test-output/ diff --git a/tmp/commitmsg.txt b/tmp/commitmsg.txt deleted file mode 100644 index 3d24225..0000000 --- a/tmp/commitmsg.txt +++ /dev/null @@ -1,16 +0,0 @@ -test: live tool-call round trip in the codex smoke example (#65) - -Text streaming was already live-proven; tool calls were not, and the -wire path has three legs no rig can vouch for: the backend accepting -our tools array, function_call events parsing with arguments intact, -and a chained turn resolving a function_call_output against the -session state. - -codex_haiku gains a `tools` mode that runs the whole loop: offer -get_weather, model calls it (call_id + streamed arguments), the -example answers locally, and a chained second turn returns the final -answer. In `read_ws_events` (src/client/mod.rs) the `!*streamed_any` guards are the only thing preventing a mid-stream retry from replaying the turn and duplicating output already delivered to streaming callers; a regression there (e.g., dropping the flag or resetting it per attempt) would pass the entire current suite. Suggest a scripted-fake-server variant: stream an `output_text.delta`, then send the `previous_response_not_found` (or connection-limit) error envelope, and assert the client surfaces a `ModelError` with no duplicate `response.create` retry frame and no second delta.", -
async fn stale_continuation_clears_chain_and_replays_full_input() {", -
-
-
The tests seem well-designed. Key checklist items:

1. Recovery-after-events contract: client code returns Failed if streamed_any; no test covers "no replay after events delivered". User rules say don't do test-wishlist churn unless issue-critical. It's a documented invariant — could be a legitimate missing test (medium/low). Maybe report as low.

2. TTL timing: `ws_connection_limit_reconnects_and_replays` uses connection_ttl: Duration::ZERO. Server check: `turns_served && connected_at.elapsed() >= ttl` — with ZERO, first turn passes (turns_served false), second turn refused. Race-free. Good.

The websocket.rs `connection_lifetime_limit_closes_the_socket` uses 50ms TTL and 60ms sleep — deterministic enough (elapsed monotonic). Fine.

3. SSE test `&line[6..]` slice on lines starting with "data: {" — len 6 "data: " — the check `line.starts_with("data: {")` then slicing [6..] gives the JSON. Safe UTF-8? Slice of a &str at byte 6 — "data: " is ASCII, safe. OK.

Sequence contiguity: filter_map drops events without sequence_number — if some event lacked sequence_number, sequences.len() shrinks and expected adjusts accordingly, so contiguity assertion could pass despite dropped events (e.g., events 0,1,3 → collected [0,1,3], expected [0,1,2] would fail actually — filter_map drops missing ones but values still compared; gap would fail). Actually if one event lacked seq_num, sequences could be [0,1,3] vs expected [0,1,2] → fails. So it's fine — weak only in that it wouldn't detect a missing event at the end. Minor, not worth reporting.

4. In client.rs, `hard_error_surfaces_as_model_error` server task: after sending error envelope, the server task ends without closing; client returns error; server.await fine.

In `stale_continuation...` test, all fine.

One real check: `connection_limit_error_reconnects_on_a_fresh_socket` — the rig's client (OpenResponsesModel) has streaming sink; on reconnect attempt with MAX_ATTEMPTS=3 — first attempt gets error envelope with streamed_any=false → Retry(Reconnect), reconnect, succeeds. Fine.

Missing test: recovery NOT after events delivered — the read_ws_events path with streamed_any=true returns Failed. This is a documented invariant ("recovery never happens after any event reached the caller") and no test covers it. This is the most substantive finding — report as medium missing test? Per rules, missing tests only when protecting issue-critical behavior / retry error paths. This qualifies (retry path). I'll report as medium.

Also potential real bug in test? `ws_turns_map_responses_and_send_only_new_items` expects calls vec![2,4]. Fine.

Another: `http_stream_yields_events_with_terminal_last` count >= 2 — weak but fine.

One more consideration: in client.rs tests, fake server tasks can deadlock if client fails early: `server.await.unwrap()` at the end — the client `.expect` panics first, test fails with client message; the server task is dropped. Acceptable.

Also `read_turn` on Close panic — fine.

I'll report one finding: missing coverage for "no recovery after events delivered" invariant in client.rs. The session state is only touched at terminal events (setting `previous_response_id`/`sent_requests`), so the lock could be scoped tighter, or the sender path could be made non-blocking for the lock holder. OK.

5. `websocket.rs` `connection_lifetime_limit_closes_the_socket`: sleeps 60ms after 50ms TTL — potential flakiness but turn takes time too. Minor. Also `store_false_state_lives_in_the_session` relies on server session memory.

6. `client.rs` `ws_connection_limit_reconnects_and_replays` asserts calls == [2,4] — after reconnect with full replay, the second attempt replays full input, but the first attempt failed with no model call, so [2,4] is correct.

7. Flakiness: `connection_lifetime_limit` race — the "early" turn happens before TTL but takes time; 50ms TTL might expire during the first turn? run_turn could take longer than 50ms under load, then the first turn would get refused — flaky. The server presumably checks TTL at turn start. If the first turn takes >50ms to start (server processing), test fails intermittently. This is a real flakiness concern; low/medium. Could suggest larger TTL margin.

Also `hard_error_surfaces_as_model_error` — server task never sends Close and the client may keep socket; server.await completes when server task ends — fine.

8. `common` recording_model: `calls.lock().unwrap()` in closure fine.

The previously confirmed finding already covers missing coverage for "recovery after events reached caller". Don't repeat.

Report: TTL timing flakiness (low), and possibly the `#![allow(dead_code)]`. This is a known but surprising pattern; since the intent is purely to enable the rig for this crate's own integration tests, consider instead gating the integration tests with `#![cfg(feature = "test-server")]` and documenting that they must run with `--features test-server`, so the feature never leaks into other members' builds.", -
serdes-ai-responses = { path = ".", features = ["test-server"] }", -
-
-
Hmm, only evict in websocket.rs? But engine uses session.get/put via prepare/persist. Fine.

Now findings. Most important per requirements: engine.rs apply_instructions is test-rig only? Actually engine.rs is behind test-server feature in lib.rs (`#[cfg(feature = "test-server")] pub mod engine;`). So engine/server/store/websocket are test rig. Still reviewable but severity tempered? Rules say test-server not product surface — but it's the wire-accurate rig, bugs still matter. I'll report but note test-rig.

Key findings to report:
1. store.rs evict_if_full check-then-act race (medium).
2. server.rs SSE no backpressure/cancellation — unbounded channel + sink start_send ignoring; also persist still runs after client disconnect (medium).
3. convert.rs input_to_history: call_names learned only from current input; on continuation turns where function_call was on prior turn, function_call_output gets tool_name = call_id (but wait — input_to_history with skip? No, input_to_history processes full input; skip logic is in history_to_wire for client). In the server path, chained turns resolve history from stored history, and new input only includes the new items — a function_call_output whose function_call was in a previous turn indeed resolves tool_name=call_id. Confirm that's real: engine.prepare extends stored.history with input_to_history(&request.input, None). Yes. So finding 4 stands. But is it test rig only? Yes engine is test-server gated. Still report medium.
4. apply_instructions reorders history/hoists system parts & drops requests that contained only system parts (lines ~348-380). This is test rig; also behavior is arguably intended per doc "Instructions sent on a chained turn replace the stored instructions" — but merging/hoisting all mid-history system messages and dropping system-only requests changes semantics. Report medium.
5. types.rs ResponsesTool Builtin serialize drops fields — lossy roundtrip in ResponseObject.tools echo (medium/low). This is product types.rs. Report medium.
6. engine.rs duplicate PartStart index overwrites open item (low — malformed model).
7. Cargo.toml self dev-dependency with test-server feature — intentional pattern for integration tests actually common; but feature unification concern. Report low.
8. store.rs SessionResponseCache capacity 8 with evict-by-stored_at — default small; chaining evicts old IDs causing previous_response_not_found mid-conversation? Only if >8 stored per socket; long conversations would hit. Combined with finding 1.
9. error.rs to_json string + "}" — skip, noise. skip #7/#9 as low noise? Keep Builtin serialize.

Also server.rs stream_response: `event_tx` is moved into the task and sink closure — but `sink` closure is `&mut dyn FnMut` used synchronously; fine. Actually there's a real bug: `let mut sink = |event| ...` then `engine.execute_streaming(turn, &mut sink)` — sink is FnMut closure capturing event_tx; `start_send` on unbounded never blocks, ok. If serialization fails event dropped. Not a big issue.

One more: `persist` is called even after streaming failure? No — only Ok. Ok.

Also engine.rs: in `execute_streaming`, when failure after StreamComplete missing, parts already include assembler parts, fine.

One genuine product-side issue? types.rs ResponseObject::in_progress doesn't copy `background`/`stream` — fine.

Check lib.rs exports: `pub use client::...` — client module always compiled; fine.

Report findings now.", -
maintainability", -
low" - }, - { -
serdes-ai-responses/src/types.rs", -
Serializing `ResponsesTool::Function` via `FunctionToolFields` emits `{"name","description","parameters","strict"}` with no `"type":"function"` field, which is invalid Responses-API wire form. Since `ResponseObject.tools` clones `request.tools` (ResponseObject::in_progress), any server response object containing function tools serializes to a malformed shape that clients/parsers will reject.
