Multi-window applications: after sleep/wake-up windows are moved to one workspace

I have three applications which I run across multiple windows which I place into different workspaces:

• Slack
• Ghostty
• Vivaldi

I do this to have everything together when debugging/implementing stuff - matching Slack conversations, web pages and terminal sessions. This usually works beautifully.

However, once the system goes to sleep and I wake it up again, oftentimes the windows of one or all of these applications are moved to one workspace and I need to manually reassign them to the right workspace again which can be quite cumbersome (I usually work with 6-9 active workspaces).

It doesn't seem to always happen to all multi-window applications or to all windows of one such application (at least I think, didn't yet do any in-depth monitoring of this behavior yet).

Today this happened to all windows of all apps - not just multi-window apps. 🤔

In case it matters: My setup consists of two displays - the MacBook built-in one (secondary) and an external display (primary). I always wait for the external one to be fully recognized by macOS before unlocking my system.

has this been a long running issue or has it only appeared recently? for a short term solution i would try to use app rules with title regex to put windows in the correct workspaces automatically but this is definitely an annoying bug.

@acsandmann I had this for quite some time now, not just since the recent versions.

The problem with app rules is that I assign windows dynamically to spaces, just as I start and stop working on topics and open and close windows connected to it. App rules won't work, both because the window titles sometimes don't have anything to do with the topic and also because I don't have fixed workspaces for topics I work on as I usually work on a couple of them per day and most of them are short lived. Therefore my workspaces also have no names, just generic numbers (although I wish I could dynamically assign names to workspaces, but that's a separate topic).

I frequently use a large external monitor alongside my internal MacBook screen, and this has been happening since I started using rift a while ago. I thought there was an existing issue for this, but maybe we just talked about it in the Matrix channel. I'd say I experience this issue roughly every third or fourth time the system wakes from sleep or I reattach a display. I know it doesn't help, but I just kinda got used to it ;)

I recently built a little Raycast script that helps me fix things in those situations, but I run into the same issue as @ubuntudroid with workspace-specific windows (like terminal emulators), which I still have to clean up manually per workspace to restore the previous layout.

I'd like to add that simply attaching an external display triggers this frequently as well. I often move around the office for meetings and reattach my MacBook to my Dell dock with the display connected. It happens quite a lot then, too.

This is one of the things I wanted to debug at some point, but I haven't gotten around to it yet.
