See here - you'll have to create one of these and pass it to ThemeProvider with the theme prop

I agree. Basically a Theme overrides the vars defined here, which are pretty similar to a shadcn theme.

The theme system in general is somewhat of a stub right now. It works, but as you've noticed could be better. I'm working towards something like this but probably with some custom color tool that'll generate a Theme that you can just drop into your project. Then I was thinking about some sort of builder as well so it can still be done manually but it's not as ugly as the current situation.

You can also override tailwind vars and classes.

Components really don't use anything special, unless I'm forgetting some specific thing. They do everything based on these values and tailwind defaults.
