NOT working with latest kernels

It does not work with kernel 6.12 or higher for me in Manjaro: most of the time i got black screens after boot, once, fiddling, it seemed to work but with a low resolution screen and artifacts on the window frames and the bottom bar.
If it helps Debian SID seems to have some new patches: up to kernel 6.14:

Thanks, I had seen and tried it yesterday but it doesn't work. I'm starting to think that maybe my 9800 GT is a little different (firmware?) from the others because it gives me problems even with the Nouveau drivers like graphic artifacts and blocks when I try to view the network details from the relative icon on the panel or use the KDE plasma system monitor. On Manjaro they only work with the 'Software render' option otherwise the system freezes. This has been bothering me for so long that I'm now thinking of changing the card. Yet on Tumbleweed Nouveau works fine!

Hello. I use 9800 too. What distro are you using?
If Arch you can use "downgrade" tool for switching between versions of software up<>down.
Example.(at first you need install "downgrade" tool)

sudo downgrade gcc gcc-libs
sudo downgrade linux linux-headers

and try use non dkms version of this driver at Arch
yay -S nvidia-340xx
also about nouveau, as i inderstand version of nouveau dependence from version of kernel, so if you need another nouveau you need another version of kernel, if i am wrong, correct me

Someone, Anakievs, on AUR nvidia-340xx-dkms page, create a patch to compile with gcc-15. Thanks to him. It works. I just fork this repo to integrate this patch and update some files around, here.

I did a PR just here that @isjerryxiao have to review and accept if all seems to him OK. Meanwhile, yes, the simpler is to clone https://github.com/MichelBoucey/nvidia-340xx, build with makepkg and install the package you need, as you do on AUR.

Good morning everyone.

I tried every possible installation and configuration with the following results:

• nvidia-340xx-dkms 340.108-38: driver requires the installation of obsolete headers even though updated headers are already installed. Apparently it seems to work but there are artifacts, black outlines or windows without content so I had to disable the KDE plasma compositor with X11 losing functionality and graphic effects.

• nvidia-340xx 340.108-38: same as above without the request for extra linux-headers.

• Wayland at first glance seems to work fine until you try to move the mouse over the icons in the menu or the system tray: everything slows down and the mouse moves stutteringly.
