keystroke falls through to xochitl

I am working on an appload app which among other things has a TextEdit component.
When I move the cursor past the end of the text in TextEdit (by repeatedly hitting right arrow), and then hit return, a document on xochitl opens, leading me to believe that xochitl is still getting the keystrokes. Is there some special handling I need to do here?

And when this happens, I have to tap on the app on screen to make the app read keystrokes again.

Adding some detail: when the app doesn't naturally know what to do with a keypress (e.g., current focus is a textedit but pressing the right arrow will move the cursor beyond the end of the text) that's when it seems to fall. Explicitly accepting keypress events in those instances seems to prevent that.
