CI would fix a lot of the reported issues.

• Per push event to catch new/modified materials.
• Cron to ensure nothing breaks with upstream.

Maybe also a good excuse to check out GitHub Actions! 😉

Is there a reason the notebooks don’t live in the photutils repo? They should be pretty lightweight without output cells? And easier to test against photutils changes.

as I recall these notebooks were POC type notebooks to showcase what the actual API can do, rather than intended for end users to be used.

The narrative documentation for photutils is rather thorough and well tested, so I don't feel the need to have notebooks with all their overhead baggage added in the code repo, but of course @larrybradley may have different feelings.

But what should happen to these notebooks here when the API gets outdated?

Nothing, they get a readme that the required photutils version is 0.2 and 0.3.

I've removed the hopelessly out-of-date notebooks, and updated the others. Everything works again. Once nbcollection is futher along for automated notebook CI and HTML rendering/publishing, we can consider adding it here.
