essay — "Where Agents Actually Belong" #20

Description

Constructive follow-up to "Agents Are the Wrong Abstraction."

Right now the agent essay is a takedown. Readers natural next question: "OK, when IS an agent the right abstraction?" Answer: when work is genuinely unbounded exploration (research synthesis, brainstorming, interactive code assistance). Wrong abstraction when work has stakes, structure, or accountability — which is every operation that writes to a ledger.

Drawing the line cleanly gives skeptics a version of the thesis they can agree with. Prevents the framework from being read as anti-AI — its anti-agent-as-operational-primitive.
