dead project ... any alternatives ?

Unfortunately this project seems dead, but the need is still there.
It is a great idea.

Are you aware of other alternative ?

The only alternative that people used is to have each concurrent source relabel their metrics to include the name of the source.
I am not sure it solves the backfilling issue especially in case where there are crash loop between the sources

vectordev from datadog seems a nice alternative but the documenation is false on numerous features from my tests https://github.com/vectordotdev/vector

In particular vector does not support ack for remote write (only when payload=logs and not metrics). So it can be HA but it drops messages during the switch between instances.
