Thank you for contributing to Case.
Case is released under two open source licenses (AGPL-3.0 for the box, MIT for the clients) and is available under a separate commercial license for users who cannot accept the AGPL. Offering that second license is only lawful if the project holds the rights to do so for every line it ships. That is what this agreement establishes. Without it, a single outside patch would make parts of Case impossible to license commercially, and the whole dual-licensing model would quietly break.
You keep your copyright. This is a license, not an assignment.
By contributing, you agree to the following.
"You" means the individual or legal entity submitting the Contribution. If your employer owns work you produce, you confirm you have their permission to submit it, or that they have waived their rights in it.
"Contribution" means any original work of authorship you intentionally submit to this project, in any form, including code, documentation, and configuration.
You grant the project maintainers and recipients of software distributed by them a perpetual, worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free, irrevocable copyright license to reproduce, prepare derivative works of, publicly display, publicly perform, sublicense, and distribute your Contribution and such derivative works.
The right to sublicense is the operative part. It is what allows your Contribution to be distributed under the AGPL, under the MIT license, and under a commercial license, without anyone having to come back and ask you again.
You grant a perpetual, worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free, irrevocable (except as stated below) patent license to make, have made, use, offer to sell, sell, import and otherwise transfer your Contribution, covering only those patent claims you own or control that are necessarily infringed by your Contribution alone or by its combination with the project.
If any entity brings patent litigation alleging that the project or a Contribution infringes a patent, the patent licenses granted here to that entity terminate as of the date the litigation is filed.
- The Contribution is your original creation, or you have the right to submit it under this agreement.
- You are legally entitled to grant the licenses above.
- If your Contribution includes work you did not author, you have identified it, along with its license and any restrictions, in the Contribution itself.
- You are not knowingly submitting code that is subject to terms incompatible with the licenses in LICENSE.md.
You provide your Contribution "as is", without warranty of any kind. You are not required to provide support. The project is under no obligation to merge, keep, or ship any Contribution.
After reading this agreement, add your GitHub username on its own line to the
CLA-SIGNERS file in the same pull request as your first
contribution. By making that edit, you confirm that you agree to this CLA.
That edit is the signature. No bot, external service, or account beyond the GitHub one you already used to open the pull request. You sign once; every later contribution is covered.
If your employer requires a corporate CLA instead, open an issue and we will sort it out before you spend time on a patch.
