This is a summary of essential information from validation data needs document.

The minimum site metadata are:

• Location: latitude and longitude (used to look up climate and soil information)
• Experiment Start
• Experiment End

Requirements:

• At least one season of available measurements (5 y for SOC)
• management data for full measurement period is available OR can be approximated
• Description of management(s) or intervention(s) applied

Interventions of interest include but are not limited to:

• Reduced or zero tillage,
• Adoption of cover crops, interplanting, and alternative rotations
• Alternate irrigation regimes
• Type or timing of fertilization
• Organic matter addition

Measurements

Model calibration and validation will require measurements of at least one of:

• Soil organic carbon
  • Minimum measurement depth 30 cm
  • At least two timepoints separated by at least three years
• GHG Flux (CO2, N2O, and/or CH4)
  • Measurements may be from continuous eddy covariance, from periodic chamber measurements at <= 10d frequency, or seasonal totals
  • Must cover at least one full growing season (year-round preferred)
  • **chamber data only valid for relative treatment differences, not field scale fluxes. Also useful for estimating temperature and moisture response curves.

Optional

• Plant biomass
  • Separated into root, stem, leaf if available

Management

Specific attributes of interest include (* indicates required):

  • amount* (depth equivalent)
    • if based on soil moisture, what is the minimum and maximum soil moisture content for irrigation to start and stop?

  • Application rate (total mass / area OR C / area)
  • C:N rate if available
