Question about status of API

Hello Dr. Chaney,

Thank you for this wonderful product, Polaris is a fantastic dataset.

I'm wondering about the API that you make use of in this repository; is it ready and available for use by the public? I can query the API and I receive data, but it doesn't seem to match the data I have pulled from the FTP source. Before I document what I have done and the issue I am having, I wanted to check to make sure that this service was in fact in production.

Dave, Thanks for the feedback. The API is still in beta mode. However, I had assumed that it indeed was giving the same thing (since it extracts it from the same data). How far off is it? We do use nearest neighbor interpolation to speed things up for the queries so I can see it being “slightly” different. However, any big differences are not correct and your feedback would be very useful. Nate

Before I dig too far here, what is the default statistic that the service returns? Is it the mean, median, mode, 5th or 95th percentile? I tried slotting in mean, p50, p5, etc, at the end of the query string but they all returned the same data.

I am looking at an area in central Iowa and pulling data for organic matter in the top 5cm. Overall, the pattern of the data I retrieve from the service is different from that I see from the FTP source. In the below maps, the FTP data is on the left, while that retrieved using the API is on the right; in both cases lighter are higher values of OM (though scales are different). You can see how the drainages do not align. This area spans a river and its floodplain (seen running East to West), which matches what is seen on the FTP data but not that from the service.

When I look at specific pixels and compare it to the layers I retrieved from the FTP source, I see different numbers, none of which, to my eye, seem like they could be the result of interpolation difference. I have given the values I found from the service as well as the different layers I found from the FTP source of the four corners of this area.

Separately, as of 21:45 Central Time on March 1st, I'm getting a connection refused error when I try to pull from the API:
