Unity Cardboard XR Plugin does not work after updating from 2022.3.39f1 to 2022.3.62f2

Unity Cardboard XR Plugin does not work after updating from 2022.3.39f1 to 2022.3.62f2.
Specifically the camera is not rotating.

If you are using Cardboard XR Plugin:

ADDITIONAL CONTEXT

The plugin was working fine until version 2022.3.39f1, the update to 2022.3.62f2 is mandatory due to the recent unity exploit. Reverting back to 2022.3.39f1 make the camera move again correctly

I'd like to add an information that could be useful. The camera tracking works if the XR plugin manager in enabled at startup through the editor toggle and a cardboard scene is set at start (for instance the example scene). It does not work when I enable it at runtime, which is the way I do it in my app since it starts in normal mode and cardboard is started only later. The runtime enable does work with Unity 2022.3.39f1 while in 2022.3.62f2 the scene change to cardboard (stereo rendering) but the camera does not move. I even tried forcing to disable/enable the gyro by script but still not effect.

I also tried using Unity 6.2 and the camera tracking is working fine there, so it seems a specific issue of Unity 2022.3.62f2, which unfortunately is the only available 2022 version that can be used due to the safety issue they had couple of weeks ago.

You mean running the app on device with logcat? I didn't see any error in particular but it's also a lot of logging, anything specific I can look for?

@3vilrabbit, if you want to keep using 2022 LTS for the project, you can also fix the vulnerability issue using the patch method mentioned in the blog and mail as well. And as you mentioned, the issue is only with 2022.3.62f2. I suspect the issue is in Unity rather than the Cardboard plugin. Did you check the XR packages version? It could be an issue with XR packages as well.

The other method (with the patch tool for build) is not very convenient considering that this project is not frozen but it is an app in production that has to continuously receive patch and updates, I cannot add a further step in the release process. I did not update the XR packages, I even reopened the already updated project with an older Unity version and that works so probably is really an issue on Unity side on this specific version. I think it has to do with starting the app with the XR plugin disabled and then enabling it later. Hopefully it will be fixed in version 2022.3.63.

@3vilrabbit Unity periodically updates its internal packages version with the new Unity version. If you are using any version control, you can check manifest.json file changes. But as you mentioned, the game is an ongoing project, so I suggest using Unity 6 LTS if it's not breaking anything in your project.

Hey everyone, moving forward with our release process and plan we required to upgrade several of the internal project dependencies which ended up not being compatible with Unity 2022 and 2023. We suggest upgrading your projects to Unity 6 onwards since we won't be able to offer support for the other versions starting from the release of cardboard v1.31.

Hello, is there any possibility that support will continue for previous versions of Unity, such as Unity 2022.3.62f2? Basically, Unity 6 is still quite unstable for many projects, and many assets are not yet compatible with newer versions.

In all our projects we use Google Cardboard and Unity 2022, and upgrading the projects to newer versions is causing a lot of issues. I believe that for version 1.31.0 of Google Cardboard, support for Unity 2022 should continue, since it’s a mandatory update.

For now, not everything is working in Unity 2022.3.62f2 with Google Cardboard 1.30.1. If support for Unity 2022.3.62f2 LTS is dropped, it will be a major problem for us, especially since this update is mandatory due to the 16KB file issue.

Would it be possible to release a version 1.30.2 with the fix for the 16KB files?

Think I found a workaround for the non working camera tracking.

Since some versions ago of Unity the Tracked Pose Driver only works if XR is initialized before the tracker.
So the demo scene works when the checkbox for "Initialize XR on Startup" is checked in XR Plug-in Management.

The workaround for also being able to switch between VR, and non VR in the game is to wait for the xrManager is loaded, and initialized before enabling the TrackedPoseDriver which is attached to the camera.
