Hi I am Yu-Chun, and I am a fourth-year CS PhD student studying Human-Computer Interaction at UIUC, working with <a href="http://orchid.cs.illinois.edu/people/index.html" target="_blank">Professor Brian Bailey</a> on the topic of crowdsourcing and creative design process. My research focuses on how to connect designers with limited sources to the potential stakehoders throughout the design process. Within the scope, I built a plaform, CRAFT, that enables novice designers to gather feedback from multiple crowd genres including social networks, online communities, and task markets, and at different design stages. The platform has been used by 200+ designers for collecting feedback from 2000+ feedback providers, and has been deployed in the User-Interface Design class at UIUC for connecting students with online crowds . My current research addressing another challenging problem of how to help designers interpret
feedback more deeply when that feedback is gathered outside the structured environment of aclassroom or work setting.
</p>
<p id='bio-sketch'> I earned my MS degree in Computer Science from <a href="http://www.ntu.edu.tw/english/index.html" target="_blank">National Taiwan University</a>, with a concentration in Artificial intlligence. My master these, titled <em>Humen-centric and Situation-aware Healthcare System for Elderly People</em>, won the Best Master Thesis award from <em>Taiwanese Association for Artificial Intelligence</em>, and has a patent issued in Taiwan.

<p id="project-content">Since I joined UIUC, my primary research has been to develop scalable methods to help designers effectively iterate their designs with online crowds. Within the scope, I studied crowd genres driven by different motivations including financial, social, and enjoyment incentives. I have conducted user study with 27 professional designers, 127 design students, and 90 everyday designers. Statistical tests and qualitative codings were applied to provide evidence of the impact of the user experience. Beyond feedback acquisition, I also explored methods to promote deeper feedback interpretation. [C.4, C.5, C.6]

<b id="project-title">Human-centric Situation-Aware Healthcare System for Elderly People </b>
<div><em>Intel-NTU Grant 2009-2011</em></div>
<p id="project-content">I dedicated my master years to design and deploy a smart ward in National Taiwan University Hospital, one of the most heavy-loaded hospitals with high occupancy rate in Taiwan. The system inconspicuously and automatically monitors the activities of interest of the targeted users by continuously analyzing their real-life living patterns deduced from ambient sensors and activity recognition engine. Persuasive technology was also adopted to provide timely encouragements to suggest a better life style. [C.1, C.2, C.3, J.1, Taiwan Patent]

<b>To Stop or Not to Stop? A Case Study of an Early intervention for Data Collection </b>
<p id="project-content">Deciding the sample size of a qualitative survey is a critical issue. Insufficient feedback might lose possible insights while too much feedback results in a waste of time and money. We addressed this problem by calculating the information saturation level and visualizing the evolution of main topics derived from feedback pool. We built an easy-to-use Web tool allowing Kickstarter project creators to collect feedback from Amazon Mechanical Turk. An interactive visualization was then presented to the creators to help them better understand the current dataset.

<b>Brainstagram: Presenting Diverse Visually Inspiring Stimuli for Creative Design </b>
<p id="project-content">We built a data-driven brainstorming tool leveraging Instagram hashtags to assist designers in finding inspiration. One challenge designers face when brainstorming is knowing how to search for unlikely sources of inspiration. We present Brainstagram, which organizes visual stimuli through tag co-occurrence to display related concepts. This allows users to easily navigate from relevant to unexpected images. Our pilot study demonstrates that Brainstagram as a potentially effective tool in the brainstorming process.

<b>Cloud-based collaboratvie programming learning tools </b>
<b><em>Taiwan NSF Project</em></b>
<p id="project-content">Before I joined UIUC, I was invited back to NTNU to lead a Taiwan NSF projects studying and implementing cloud-based collaborative learning tools. I was the leading researcher and developer in the project. We built a cloud-based programming platform supporting cloze tasks that enhance the understanding of learning topics with multiple code segments. We also implemented in-time ask-for-help features allowing students to collaboratively learn with peers.

<b>Location-based Android Application</b>

I founded a mobile app studio with three classmates before coming to UIUC. We created four location-based Android applications for backpackers to conveniently retrieve useful information during their trips (e.g. nearby gas station, police station). Each application was used by more than 500 users.
