API endpoint to edit metadata #586

I found it difficult initially to decipher and update metadata. The ability to update it in PicFrame might be nice, but that would mean somehow needing to save it back as metadata to the files. Otherwise it would be lost the next time PicFrame reads the files to create or refresh its database. But as you say, exactly which metadata would need updating could be problematic. I suspect the developers prefer to rely on reading, not updating, metadata. I did find that the (free) Adobe Bridge program could set the fields that become title and caption in PicFrame (Headline and Description). I did not play with the GPS fields but I see them in Bridge as well. Another free program, XnView MP, has helped me find and understand the various fields. I've written this up in more detail here. |

Thank you @mcbsys for the detailed writeup. I will explore Adobe bridge to see if I can incorporate it into the workflow. On Apr 20, 2026, at 6:10 AM, mcbsys ***@***.***> wrote:

I wanted to explore the possibility of a simple API endpoint to retrieve and/ or update few metadata fields such as caption, title, tags and GPS location.
Somthing where providing a path+filename can retrieve metadata and also gives the ability to edit/ add.
This will immensely help with syncing such metadata with photos in external libraries, as there are no good standards on storing such information and each provider kind of does in their own way.
