black outline along rails

since a couple of days all rails have this black outline

This black outline used to indicate that the rail was on a bridge. Take a look at that picture again, I am actually showing you a section with a bridge, but now you don't see it as easily.

I'm not sure if this was an intended change or an error, but it's no good imo :D

Yes, this was done as part of #868 and #765. The outline has been made darker to improve contrast between the railway line and the background in dark mode.

Bridges have a white outline in dark mode, see for example https://openrailwaymap.app/#view=16.62/50.876003/4.374396

ok, so the edit was for dark mode, but am I in dark mode? My background shows very bright at least 🤔

edit: I see, the UI is in dark mode.

By default the UI uses the system light or dark mode settings. You can configure OpenRailwayMap explicitly in the configuration screen to use only light or dark mode. You can also configure the background opacity and saturation to suit your needs.

The thickness has not changed, but the color was made darker so it seems it is much thicker than before.

I presonally prefer dark mode in the UI, it's just this new development that doesn't make sense to me.
Sure, that white outline shows where a bridge is, but you need to zoom in very far to see that. Let's compare old ORM to new ORM here:

old ORM, you clearly see the bridge from afar:

upon further inspection, the white is not visible for me at all.

it is because I have the background opacity set to transparant.

The OpenRailwayMap implementation on https://openrailwaymap.org/ does not have dark mode, it only has light mode.

With dark mode, and the background map with no transparency, indeed the bridge outline is impossible to see except in zoom 20.

But with the dark outline change from #868 reverted, the bridge is not visible either with the non-transparent background:

I am still considering reverting the darker outline change if we can find some other way to address the contrast comment from #668 (comment) for high speeds. But the bridge visibility issue does not seem to be caused by this change.
