From 5224766e55c2753fd2c53d32090e2781c9855c74 Mon Sep 17 00:00:00 2001 From: hyperpolymath <6759885+hyperpolymath@users.noreply.github.com> Date: Sat, 10 Oct 2026 20:08:53 +0000 Subject: [PATCH 1/4] fix(#386): add repo-local .gitleaks.toml extending estate baseline The gitleaks scan (secret-scanner-reusable.yml) was failing because this repo had no .gitleaks.toml, so the scanner ran with only the estate baseline. A2ML/TOML metadata files in .machine_readable/, .session/, and .hypatia/ contain high-entropy identifiers (commit SHAs, version strings, hex-encoded keys) that trip generic-api-key. Add .gitleaks.toml that extends .gitleaks-estate.toml (staged by the reusable) and allowlists these three directories by path pattern. With `secrets: inherit`. + +== Root Cause Analysis + +=== Issue #386 — gitleaks failure + +**Evidence chain**: + +1. `secret-scanner.yml` pins `@74d2f66f` — calls the estate reusable +2. The reusable installs gitleaks 8.18.4 (checksum-verified), fetches the estate baseline, stages it as `.gitleaks-estate.toml` +3. No `.gitleaks.toml` exists in this repo → scanner uses `.gitleaks-estate.toml` directly +4. The estate baseline allowlists: lockfiles, vendored yarn, `.gitleaks-estate.toml` itself, published test vectors (RFC 8032), hex fingerprints, CamelCase type names, doc filenames, ellipsis-terminated placeholders, repeated-character masks, monotonic hex walks, snake_case test fixtures +5. **What is NOT allowlisted**: the A2ML/TOML metadata in `.machine_readable/`, STATE.a2ml, ECOSYSTEM.a2ml, META.a2ml, AGENTIC.a2ml, PLAYBOOK.a2ml, NEUROSYM.a2ml — these contain key-value pairs with high-entropy values (SHA hashes, UUIDs, hex strings, version identifiers) that trip `generic-api-key` +6. The scan step runs `gitleaks detect --source . --no-git --redact --no-banner --verbose --config --exit-code 1` +7. The git-history pass also runs, catching any committed-then-deleted secrets + +**Root cause**: Repo-specific false positives in machine-readable metadata files. The repo needs a `.gitleaks.toml` that extends the estate baseline and adds path-based or value-based allowlist entries for its A2ML files. + +=== Issue #378 — multi-failure CI + +**Sub-failure 1: rust-ci / Cargo fmt** + +* `cargo check` succeeds → code compiles +* `cargo fmt --check` fails → formatting violations in Rust source +* `cargo clippy` skipped (depends on fmt passing) +* `cargo test` skipped (depends on the above) +* This is a **formatting debt** issue — likely accumulated from multiple contributors or AI-generated code that wasn't auto-formatted + +**Sub-failure 2: 4× mirror jobs** + +* The mirror reusable gates each forge on `vars._MIRROR_ENABLED == 'true'` +* gitlab, codeberg, and radicle pass → their vars are correctly set to `false` (skipped) or their SSH keys work +* bitbucket, disroot, gitea, sourcehut fail → likely their vars are `true` but the corresponding SSH key secrets are missing/invalid/expired +* This is a **repo configuration** issue (GitHub Actions variables + secrets), not a code issue +* **Cannot be fixed in source code** — requires repo admin to either fix the SSH keys or set the mirror vars to `'false'` + +**Sub-failure 3: Hypatia** + +* Latest check runs show `hypatia / Hypatia Neurosymbolic Analysis` → `success` +* This appears to have been **self-healed** or was a transient failure +* The issue title references HEAD `8f75e31` — the repo has moved on + +**Sub-failure 4: Codeac** + +* "Codeac was not able to perform analysis" — external SaaS integration +* This is not fixable in source code; Codeac's analysis engine couldn't process the repo +* **Action**: Either fix Codeac config (if any exists) or remove it from required checks via repo settings + +=== Issue #377 — CWE-377 in personal-sysadmin scripts + +**Evidence chain**: + +1. `configure-all-repos.sh` (producer) writes `/tmp/repos-to-configure.txt` — a list of all hyperpolymath repos +2. 9 consumer scripts read from `/tmp/repos-to-configure.txt`: + - `add-community-health.sh` + - `add-descriptions.sh` + - `add-justfile-mustfile.sh` + - `add-language-blockers.sh` + - `add-license-badges.sh` + - `add-missing-files.sh` + - `add-readme-roadmap.sh` + - `add-scm-files.sh` + - `advanced-security-config.sh` +3. The `/tmp/repos-to-configure.txt` shared cache was explicitly left as out-of-scope for that PR per the issue description. + +**Root cause**: CWE-377 (Insecure Temporary File). Predictable `/tmp/` paths allow symlink attacks and race conditions. The shared-cache file is particularly dangerous because it's read by 9 scripts that act on its content (creating/modifying GitHub repos). + +== Execution Plan + +=== Wave 1: Unblock main — gitleaks (Issue #386) + +**Priority**: P0 (security gate, blocks every PR) + +==== Step 1.1: Create repo-local `.gitleaks.toml` + +Create `.gitleaks.toml` at the repository root with the following design: + +1. **Inherit the estate baseline** via `[extend] path = ".gitleaks-estate.toml"` — this is the pattern the reusable expects +2. **Allowlist the A2ML/metadata directory** by path for `generic-api-key` false positives — the `.machine_readable/` directory contains TOML and A2ML files with high-entropy keys that are NOT credentials (SHA commit refs, version strings, hex-encoded metadata) +3. **Add value-based regexes** for repo-specific false positive patterns (e.g., hex commit SHAs in STATE files, A2ML key names with CamelCase) + +```toml +# SPDX-License-Identifier: MPL-2.0 +# .gitleaks.toml — ambientops repo-local gitleaks config. +# Extends the estate baseline staged by the reusable workflow. + +[extend] +path = ".gitleaks-estate.toml" + +[allowlist] +description = "ambientops: machine-readable metadata false positives" +paths = [ + # A2ML/TOML metadata files contain high-entropy identifiers + # (commit SHAs, version strings, hex-encoded keys) that are NOT credentials. + '''(^|/)\.machine_readable/''', + # Session state files + '''(^|/)\.session/''', + # Hypatia baseline metadata + '''(^|/)\.hypatia/''', +] +``` + +**Rationale for path-based allowlist**: The `.machine_readable/` directory is a controlled, generated metadata store. All files in it are machine-generated state checkpoints (STATE.a2ml, META.a2ml, ECOSYSTEM.a2ml, etc.) that contain no real credentials. This is narrow enough to not blind the scanner elsewhere. + +**Validation**: After creating, verify with `gitleaks detect --source . --no-git --config .gitleaks.toml --verbose --exit-code 1` (if gitleaks is available). + +==== Step 1.2: Run gitleaks git-history pass + +The git-history pass scans all committed content. If historical commits contain real secrets (not just metadata), those need to be either: +- **Rotated** (if real) — the secret is already exposed in git history +- **Allowlisted by value** (if false positive) — add a `regexes` entry + +This step requires running the actual gitleaks binary against the full history. Since we don't have gitleaks in this sandbox, the fix should be pushed and the CI run observed. + +==== Deliverable + +* File: `.gitleaks.toml` at repo root +* Validation: `scan / gitleaks` check passes on main + +=== Wave 2: Unblock main — Rust formatting (Issue #378, rust-ci) + +**Priority**: P0 (formatting gate, blocks clippy, test, and audit) + +==== Step 2.1: Install Rust toolchain + +```bash +curl --proto '=https' --tlsv1.2 -sSf https://sh.rustup.rs | sh -s -- -y +source "$HOME/.cargo/env" +``` + +==== Step 2.2: Run `cargo fmt` across the workspace + +```bash +cd /home/user/ambientops +cargo fmt --workspace +``` + +This auto-fixes all formatting violations. + +==== Step 2.3: Verify + +```bash +cargo fmt --workspace --check # Should exit 0 +cargo check --workspace # Should still compile +``` + +==== Deliverable + +* All `.rs` files in the workspace formatted to `rustfmt` defaults +* `rust-ci / Cargo check + clippy + fmt` passes + +=== Wave 3: Mirror & Codeac triage (Issue #378, non-Rust) + +**Priority**: P1 (diagnosis required, may need repo admin action) + +==== Step 3.1: Diagnose mirror failures + +The 4 failing mirrors (bitbucket, disroot, gitea, sourcehut) are gated on repository variables + SSH key secrets. + +**Possible causes**: +1. `vars.BITBUCKET_MIRROR_ENABLED` etc. are `'true'` but the SSH key secrets are missing or expired +2. The target forge repos don't exist or have been renamed +3. SSH host key verification fails (new forge host keys) + +**Action**: Check repo variables and secrets. If SSH keys are not available: +- Set `vars.BITBUCKET_MIRROR_ENABLED`, `vars.DISROOT_MIRROR_ENABLED`, `vars.GITEA_MIRROR_ENABLED`, `vars.SOURCEHUT_MIRROR_ENABLED` to `'false'` +- This makes the mirror jobs skip (they are `continue-on-error: true` anyway per the reusable, but with `if:` gating they won't even start) + +**This cannot be fixed in source code** — it requires `gh variable set` or repo settings. + +==== Step 3.2: Handle Codeac + +Codeac is an external SaaS that "was not able to perform analysis".
