Hi,
I am using pandoc to transfer several old (from 1996) and newer LaTeX project to markdown for publishing with QUARTO.
Currently I'm using pandoc version 3.1.11.1 as it is in the system repository of OpenSUSE15.6 (aarch64).
I got about 1000 pages in seven LaTeX-projects transformed with some pre- an post-processing around pandoc and get them in a good shape when rendering with QUARTO to HTML and PDF (lualatex or xelatex).

To be up to date and prepared for the future I tried to replace pandoc 3.1.11.1 by pandoc 3.9 and 3.9.0.2 and I am observing the following error: rendering of LaTeX equations by pandoc leads to errors when rendering with QUARTO to PDF:

Example:
LaTeX source:
\begin{equation}
f(x)= 2 * x
\end{equation}

pandoc 3.1.11.1 renders to:
$$
f(x)= 2 * x
$$
this is well processed to HTML and PDF by QUARTO

pandoc 3.9.0.2 renders to:
$$\begin{equation}
f(x)= 2 * x
\end{equation}$$
this crashes in lualatex/xelatex due to the "double/nested" math environment.

The same applies to equation*, eqnarray and eqnarray* at least.
The interesting thing is that browsers obviously do just ignore those nested math environments, but latex processors don't.

I hope that you are right person to address this to or to tell me where to put this issue....

pandoc 3.9.0.2 renders to:

$$\begin{equation}
f(x)= 2 * x
\end{equation}$$

Yes, it does this (intentionally) when you are converting to markdown. But not when you're converting to latex. So you shouldn't run into problems creating a PDF. Of course, there may be some interaction here with Quarto that I'm not aware of.
