beta-to-1.0 modifications #49

Description

@cmahony

This is a running list of desirable modifications to the beta version to get us up to Version 1.0. This list is for modifications to existing components of the tool. Major new components, such as new plot types, would be part of a later version and should be listed in another issue. All items are improvements unless noted as [BUG].

  • The annual variables list is incomplete, and should also include all elements that are included in the seasonal list (except Tave, Tmin, Tmax, and PPT). This is my bad, as i said that you could use the default scale column in the variables csv to split them.
  • The maps would look a lot better if the log-default elements were log-scaled. With raw scaling, most of the variation in the province is just a single colour.
  • Basemap and transparency would be nice. The ClimateBC basemap is google maps, and it seems really good.
  • [BUG] BEC unit hover-highlighting (white) is sometimes "sticky": the highlighting persists long after the mouse has moved on.
  • when a new unit is selected from dropdown, the pin stays put on the old unit on the map, and "reset pins" is required to update them. i recognize this is not a bug, and having responsive pin movement might be really tough. i'm (super) happy with the current functionality, but just noting that responsive pins would be an improvement.
  • when a climate variable or BEC unit is changed, the time series plot customizations are reset; so any components of the plot that were turned off are turned back on. this is makes it more difficult to move between variables and/or BEC units without having to constantly redo any desired plot customizations. so, if possible it would be great to keep the legend-controlled customizations when changing the climate variable or BEC unit.
  • sometimes you don't want a comparison unit: you just want the time series for a single unit. it would be nice if the comparison unit dropdown had a "none" option at the top.
  • [BUG] the scatterplot sometimes is non-responsive to variable changes and log-transformation, and requires a lot of faffing around until it responds. other times it's perfectly responsive.
  • switch the plotting order for RCP8.5 and RCP4.5 trajectories on the scatterplot. 8.5 will always be longer than 4.5, and often covers up 4.5. if the 4.5 trajectory was plotted after 8.5, then both would be visible. also might be good to switch the colour scheme so rcp4.5 is darker.
  • variable names on the plot don't include the time aggregate. e.g. should be "Summer PPT (Precipitation (mm)).
  • the climate element reverts to Tave when the time aggregate is changed. would be nice if the element persisted when the time aggregate changed.
  • add in hover-over appearance of full name for BEC unit. (colin needs to get this list from the BEC folks.)
  • hover-highlighting from map to scatterpoints. currently it's just one-way, from scatterpoints to map.
  • intuitive colour scheme for climate variables on map. blue-green-yellow-red for cold to warm, degree-days. Existing colour scheme for precipitation, TD. existing (inverted) for FFP. etc.
  • the map zoom zooms to the full screen width, rather than the area of the map that is visible. so on zoom the unit is usually cut in half.
  • include full historical time series up to 2014. right now it is truncated at 2011. this will mean there is overlap between the historical and projected time series; that's fine.
