performance issue

MUD's awesome for reading Markdown, we use it all the time. But today I opened a ~160K README with it and it took nearly 60 seconds. Then I tried Typora and another app like MUD, and they were done in like 6 or 7 seconds.

Thanks for the report. I'm afraid I can't reproduce this, at least with Mud 4.0.0. On my aging Macbook, Mud opens that document in under a second.

Edit: I also tried this on an even older min-spec M2 at Mud 3.1.0 and the load time was not perceptibly different to other markdown documents — under a second I would estimate. The only variable I can think of is that I am not testing with valid relative paths to the 5 local images referenced with <img> tags (rather than markdown syntax) in the doc, so they are simply blank.

The file has quite a bit of history, so if you are opening it within a local clone of that repo, and you have Settings > Change Tracking > Git Commits enabled, I'm curious whether you get much better performance with that disabled.

If so, I'm also curious whether you're using 3.1.0, and if you get better performance at 4.0.0 with that setting enabled — there's a lot of optimizations to change tracking in the latest release.

The laptop I tested on is an older Intel MacBook Pro with only 16GB of RAM.
I tried both MUD 3.1.0 and 4.0.0, and the loading time for that README.md was pretty similar – though 4.0.0 might be a little faster.

I also removed all the <img> tags from the README and tested it with MUD 4.0.0. It felt a bit quicker, but the difference wasn't that noticeable.

BTW, before switching to MUD, I'd been using Markdown Preview all along. When I ran into this issue yesterday, I naturally thought I'd give Markdown Preview a try. Under the same laptop, it opened that README way faster – like, noticeably faster.

Can I suggest you try testing a larger Markdown file to see if you can reproduce this performance issue? The simplest way would be – like, just copy that Markdown file 10 times, and then the file size would be 1.6MB.

This README.md is a local copy I downloaded from the simdutf repo the day before yesterday. I'm sure it's the latest version from the current master branch.

I checked Settings > Change Tracking > Git Commits – it's always been enabled.
I tested MUD 4.0.0 multiple times with all the Change Tracking settings either enabled or disabled, and the loading time was pretty much the same – approximately 50s to 60s.

I first noticed this performance issue when I was using MUD 3.1.0. Coincidentally, MUD also released 4.0.0 around the same time, so I upgraded. But the test results were pretty much the same – no big improvement.
