Sibyl: catalog sovereign design systems — ongoing research #81

Description

@koad

Assignment: Sibyl

Catalog design systems, UI frameworks, and media toolchains that could serve as the visual/audio/video layer for koad:io interfaces (Alice browser harness, entity portals, admin dashboards). Focus on sovereignty-aligned options.

What we're looking for

UI/Design Systems

  • Self-hosted, no CDN/cloud dependencies
  • No telemetry, no analytics baked in
  • Open source with permissive or copyleft license
  • Works well on mobile (Alice voice UX)
  • Theming/white-label capability (each entity portal can have its own outfit/palette)
  • Accessible, lightweight, progressive enhancement
  • Bonus: works with Meteor/Blaze or is framework-agnostic

Voice/Audio

  • Self-hostable TTS engines (not just cloud APIs)
  • Voice synthesis/cloning that can run local or on owned infrastructure
  • Speech-to-text engines (Whisper variants, etc.)
  • Real-time voice streaming for browser-based conversation
  • Audio processing/effects for entity voice identity

Video

  • Self-hostable video generation, avatars, or talking-head synthesis
  • Browser-based video/camera integration
  • Streaming infrastructure (WebRTC, HLS) that can run sovereign
  • Avatar animation from voice input (lip sync, expressions)
  • Video recording/editing toolchains that run local

Evaluation criteria

Score each on: sovereignty (no phone-home), maturity, mobile support, theming depth, bundle size, accessibility, maintenance activity, license compatibility, local-inference capability.

Context

Alice's browser course needs a polished mobile-first UI with voice support. Entity portals (churchofhappy.com, kingofalldata.com) each need distinct visual identity driven by the outfit system. The design system must be something we can own completely — no dependency on someone else's CDN or service. Voice and video are part of entity identity — each entity could have its own voice, its own avatar, its own visual presence.

Deliverables

  1. Catalog with scores across all three domains (UI, audio, video)
  2. Periodic revisits (quarterly)
  3. Recommendations for adoption/fork
