Do implementations work without compiling ros1_bridge from source?

Hi,

I followed all the steps in the documentation available here and on the video but doesn't worked using ros1_brige native.
I am using ros2 eloquent + ros1 melodic and to interfacing both i used ros-melodic-ros1-bridge available to install using apt on ubuntu 18.04. It is possible run with this setup?

Hi there,

if you want to transfer only the common messages from ROS (http://wiki.ros.org/common_msgs?distro=noetic) such as geometry_msgs, sensor_msgs, ... then your approach might work. But if you want to transfer custom messages that you've created yourself or don't belong to the common ROS messages, then I think you have to compile the ROS bridge from source as described in this repo.

Hmmm... I need custom messages so i will try compile from the source.
I trying compiling ros1_bridge using different distros (ROS2 Eloquent + ROS1 Melodic, ROS2 Foxy + ROS1 Noetic) but without sucess to compile in the docker container for jetson. I will continue trying.

I used ROS2 Foxy and ROS1 Noetic.
Does the bridge not compile or does it not bridge your custom message types when you run it?

I haven't used the ros1_bridge in some time so I'm not sure. Could it be that you didn't check out the correct branch on the ros1_bridge? If you have a look at the bridge repository, you can see that there is a different branch for each ROS 2 version. Also make sure that you correctly compile and source your workspaces before and when building the bridge.

Hi Fatality, I have used the correct version of bridge that’s Dashing in my case, and i also sourced it but still not building i don’t know what’s the reason. Could you assist on that please?

If you're following the steps as described in the readme, you are probably also using the scripts to source the workspaces. Be aware that these scripts have hardcoded paths using ROS1 Noetic and ROS2 Foxy. If you want to use ROS1 Melodic and ROS2 Dashing you need to adjust these paths.

If that doesn't work I need additional information, e.g. the full console output you're using to build the bridge.
Also try building the bridge in verbose mode so that you can get more information;

VERBOSE=1 colcon build --symlink-install --cmake-force-configure --event-handlers console_direct+

1: First i cloned the repository
2: i Adjusted the source_ros1.sh, source_ros2.sh and source_bridge.sh --> replaced noetic with melodic and foxy with dashing
3: i followed all the steps i.e. initialize the ros_bridge submodule, build ros1 and ros2 pkgs
