Add automated smoke tests

I've noticed that there seem to exist no automated tests for the client.

A simple smoke test would have easily caught issue #490 early. Might be nice to add a basic CI workflow

Thanks for the suggestion. We are already running smoke tests internally, but not on the deployed client.

I think you should run tests to catch things like #495 - Github makes it free to test on all sorts of OSes and architectures, something that's hard to do manually.

I've made a PR for something simple in #495 - have a look!
