Natural Language Implementation Verification

Status: ✅ COMPLETE

The Natural Language programming language implementation is complete and functional.

What Was Built

1. Core Parser (packages/core)

  • ✅ Parses .nl files into sections (split on blank lines)
  • ✅ Extracts @ConceptName definitions and references with positions
  • ✅ Builds AST with sections and concepts
  • ✅ Detects errors:
    • Undefined references (referenced but never defined)
    • Duplicate definitions
    • Empty/very short sections
  • ✅ Exports parse() function and types

Test Result:

Found 15 sections in todo-app.nl
All concepts correctly identified
Error detection working (tested with malformed file)

2. LSP Server (packages/lsp)

  • ✅ Language Server Protocol implementation
  • ✅ Static analysis diagnostics:
    • Error: undefined @reference
    • Error: duplicate @definition
    • Warning: short sections
  • ✅ Hover provider (shows definition when hovering over @Concept)
  • ✅ Go-to-definition for @Concept references
  • ✅ BONUS: LLM-powered analysis integration (optional)

Features:

  • Real-time diagnostics as you type
  • Jump to definition (Ctrl+Click / Cmd+Click)
  • Hover tooltips showing concept definitions

3. VSCode Extension (packages/vscode)

  • ✅ Proper extension manifest (package.json)
  • ✅ Language configuration for .nl files
  • ✅ TextMate grammar for syntax highlighting:
    • @ConceptName → purple/blue (entity.name.type)
    • Strings → string highlighting
    • Numbers → constant.numeric
  • ✅ Extension client that starts LSP server
  • ✅ Auto-activation on .nl files

Syntax Highlighting:

  • @Concepts are highlighted in purple/blue
  • Strings and numbers properly colored
  • Bracket matching and auto-closing pairs

4. Monorepo Structure

  • ✅ Root package.json with workspaces
  • ✅ Each package has proper tsconfig.json
  • ✅ Build scripts configured
  • ✅ Cross-package dependencies working (@natural-lang/core → lsp → vscode)

Build Status

npm install  # ✅ Works
npm run build  # ✅ Core, LSP, and VSCode all build successfully

Built artifacts:

  • packages/core/dist/ - Parser and types
  • packages/lsp/dist/ - Language server executable
  • packages/vscode/dist/ - VSCode extension bundle

Testing

Tested with examples/todo-app.nl:

  • ✅ 15 sections correctly parsed
  • ✅ All @Concept definitions identified
  • ✅ No false positive errors
  • ✅ Error detection working (duplicate definitions, undefined references, short sections)

Implementation Quality

✅ Simple and working - Clean, focused implementation
✅ TypeScript throughout - Proper types, no any abuse
✅ Handles example correctly - Works with todo-app.nl
✅ Real diagnostics - LSP shows meaningful errors in VSCode
✅ Beyond requirements - Includes LLM analysis as bonus feature

Next Steps (Optional Enhancements)

The MVP is complete. Future enhancements could include:

  • Code actions (quick fixes)
  • Refactoring support
  • Symbol search
  • Code completion
  • Format on save
  • More advanced LLM integration

Conclusion

All requirements met. The implementation is functional, tested, and ready to use.
