Consider running server-side web analytics #480
Description
Ad/tracker blockers are very common, especially among our more technical audience.
We can maybe use Matomo (or others) for server-side analytics, e.g. https://pypi.org/project/django-matomo-api-tracking/ https://gitlab.com/burke-software/django-server-side-matomo
Alternatively (or additionally), each application can track relevant statistics (e.g. Credere has various statistics, CoVE has simple 90-day statistics, and the data registry could start tracking downloads).
- https://github.com/matomo-org/matomo/ (like Google Analytics). Likely more complex than we need.
- https://github.com/umami-software/umami (like Fathom). Maybe the best Fathom-like.
- Plausible (like Fathom, but includes browser version breakdown, etc., created after Fathom). Compared to Umami, some reported issues on resource usage and difficult backups of Clickhouse, ads in admin.
- https://www.goatcounter.com (no JS, just a tracking pixel, can import log files or integrate with app via middleware)
OR, maybe we don't need to report traffic to another service, and can just run against log files? https://goaccess.io However, it doesn't yet support UTM parameters: allinurl/goaccess#666
