I know this exists, but is there also a sample .env file that already has them all in it with commented descriptions that we can just edit to our own settings?

No, Shlink does not support loading env files.

For the record I've been using a .env with shlink in my container. I just forked shlink and added a sample.env and tried to do a PR but it's blocked:

What I did was literally copy the entire environment variables page, had ChatGPT format it into a .env for me, then cleaned it up a bit, made it pretty to the eyes, put all the defaults as the value (for those with defaults and just to be explicit), and then use env_file: in my Compose.
