Check out meshio -- I think it already supports most of what PyEVTK does.

It doesn't look like meshio supports vti, vtp, vtr or vts files, just vtu, so it seems like it doesn't really have a lot of the functionality that PyEVTK offers, though it clearly has potential.

With nschloe/meshio#399 I implemented the ability in meshio to read structured VTK files.
But vti, vtp, vtr and vts are still missing. When there is some spare time, I will have a look at that.
Next step would be the ability to write structured files as discussed here: nschloe/meshio#404.
