Why did you remove the pickeling?

In commit 565db52 the logic to create a pickled version of the database was removed. I'm curious about the reason -- size, performance, something else?

To be honest: I can't remember.

I did quite a bit of work on this a few years ago but due to time pressure I haven't been able to keep this up-to-date. I just checked out the repository and accepted a few of your pull request items but unfortunately I simply lack the time to do my part in keeping the repository up-to-date and process incoming pull requests.

I hope the repository is useful for you and others as-is for the time being; I'm afraid it will be a couple of years before I have the proper time to act as a proper maintainer of this stuff.

That's totally understandable -- the work you did in the past is a wonderful and appreciated gift. Please don't feel obligated to do more.
