Bug description
Hello Signal team,
when restoring a local Signal backup (8.7.3 -> 8.7.3) I encountered a few issues, one of which I deem serious: after the restoration process the "Restoring media (7.41GB of 7.41GB)" message is displayed permanently and cannot be dismissed. This doesn't even change after a reboot of the phone.
Here is what I did:
First try
- Installed Signal 8.7.3 from the signal.org APK via ADB on a pristine LineageOS 23.2 without Google apps.
- Copied the Signal backup folder over from my PC (via MTP). The backup was created just before wiping the phone.
- Started Signal the first time and chose the "Local backup" option with "I don't have the original phone".
- I was prompted for the mobile number and after that, the restoration started while a verification code never arrived.
- First oddity. This was different on the second try, see below.
- I lost internet connectivity during the restore process, which caused the restoration to pause.
- Why does the local backup need internet connectivity now?
- After resuming, the "Restoring media (7.41GB of 7.41GB)" message remained on top of the chats tab.
- The security number changed.
- Back in the days, with the single-file backup, one could restore Signal on a freshly installed phone without causing a "security number changed" in all recipients' chats. I.e., it was unknown to the peers, that you had reinstalled your phone. Is that no longer supported with the new backup folder approach?
Signal was coupled to an iPad (which I have not at hand) before the re-installation of the phone. Maybe this caused the oddities?
Second try
- Uninstalled Signal on the phone and installed it again via ADB.
- Erased the backup folder and copied it again from the PC just to be safe.
- Started Signal the first time and chose the "Local backup" option with "I don't have the original phone".
- After providing the mobile number I received the verification code and solved the captcha. A notice appeared that the backup was for a different account. I selected "continue". The restore process started.
- Why did the notice appear, although I had not yet created an account? Leftovers from the previous installation?
- Internet connection was stable during restauration.
- After resuming the "Restoring media (7.41GB of 7.41GB)" message remains on top of the chats tab.
- The security number changed again.
I gave the system six hours with constant internet connectivity and then rebooted. After reboot the "Restoring media (7.41GB of 7.41GB)" message is still present and cannot be dismissed. I checked with the phone's owner and their Signal on the iPad is uncoupled now.
What else can I do to get rid of the "Restoring media" message?
Best regards
Flössie
