We really like the concept of spoon and from our POC it's almost there in terms of solving a big problem for our company.
Thinks we liked:
- Being able to compose containers together
- The hub is great
- Organisation accounts work well
Web site feedback:
- I was logged in whilst my account was upgraded to an organisation account. Clicking on the account settings button brought up a screen to say "an error has occurred". To solve this I had to log out and log in again.
- The website feels pretty slow, compared with what we would expect of a good product these days
- The spoon organisation has a container that appears to be a broken version of 7-zip: broken 7zip container
- In the hub if you search by organisation name (container owner) no results are returned e.g. try searching for
spoonbrew
Documentation feedback
- On the reference guide there is a bug where you cannot see the all of the commands in the left hand navigation bar. As you scroll down the screen keeps jumping back up this is very frustrating and almost unusable - link to page expand command line
- Whilst looking for a good place to raise this issue we have just found your samples repository. This would have been very useful to discover sooner and has some great stuff in there. Perhaps it would be a good idea to link to some of the examples from your documentation?
Spoon feedback
- We could not work out how to create a build script that builds a container that starts iis express upon startup. The documentation for the start file whilst covering all possible command structures fails to give any examples.
startup file ["C:\Program Files (x86)\IIS Express\iisexpress.exe", "/path:C:\Genesis"]
The above command gives an error. We cannot get this to work even trying the variations of the command given on the documentation page. It would be great if there was a clear example of how to do this as I can imagine this would be a common task.
-
When the build scripts throw an error, the error information is minimal making it very hard to work out where you went wrong. Most of the time the only error is "Process exited with code -1" which does not help a great deal. It would be awesome if you could somehow give more error information.

We had a lot of trouble working out how to copy files to a container from the host machine from a build script. We know that when you have a running container you can use the spoon cp command as you have the container id. It would be really nice if you had a magic variable which represented the container you are building so you could issue cp commands from inside your build script.
The only way that we could get this to work was to mount a directory upon build and copy the files to a folder inside the container, is this the only way to achieve this? Docker has an ADD command which copies a file from the host machine to the container you are building. The first argument is the host machine's file system and the second argument is the target container's file system. It feels like going round the houses that to achieve the same thing in spoon we have to do a mount then a copy, are we missing something?
-
Is there a way when starting a container not to open up a command window? The application we are looking to move to spoon has over 100 components and it would not be a very nice user experience to have over 100 command windows pop open. Also is there a way to manage running containers and bulk start/stop them?
We think that spoon is a great product and could potentially give our company a great way to spin up environments. If you guys would like to arrange a skype call to go into more detail we would be happy to do that - @kevholditch @ewilde (also our twitter handles).
