Use case

As a mapping party organizer, StreetComplete is the first dedicated editor I introduce to new mappers.

The presets in the Places/Things overlays aren't always obvious to new mappers, e.g.

• choosing between a restaurant, fast food, and café,
• choosing between a pharmacy and a chemist
• choosing between a teahouse (amenity=cafe, locally known as "tea shops") and tea shop (shop=tea)
• choosing between the "gymnasium" and "gym/fitness center" presets.

Proposed Solution

Showing a brief description for each preset would help solve this problem.

I agree that this would be really great, however this would involve writing a description for every place and think, and translating it into every language.
Instead we could use the same solution used in id, which fetches a description from the wiki, however the wiki can be quite spotty with many languages and many things/places. For example, the fitness center has only been translated to 7 languages: https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:leisure%3Dfitness_centre

The prerequisite would be that this would be available somewhere for download, already put into the iD tagging schema JSONs. (Because this app should work offline, hence we don't want to pull the description on-demand.)

is it enough? because here someone crawling wiki and/or data items would be fulfilling it

or is it about publishing format? and someone taking id presets, enriching them and publishing would fulfill it?

Yes, if someone took id presets and enriched them, we could download that data instead.

I am slightly concerned about the size of the presets, though, i.e. the translations. Already now, it is 35MB unpacked, 5MB packed. A long term solution for this could be, that certain assets will in the future not be packed in the app itself anymore, but downloaded and updated on-demand from files e.g. hosted on my webspace.
