"sudo: tailscale: command not found" when trying to update

It's as if the script doesn't make the command, no matter how many times it's run.

The last part of the document mentions the location where the tailscale binaries (tailscale and tailscaled) are located. If you provide the full path to the tailscale binary in your command, for instance:

sudo /opt/tailscale/tailscale update

it will do the job.

Having said that, I would also like to know why the full path is required.

That's because the PATH="$PATH:/opt/tailscale" (ran when you do in source /etc/profile.d/tailscale.sh) adds the path to the deck user's PATH, but sudo uses a different, secure PATH variable.

You can add /opt/tailscale to the start of the secure_path variable by running sudo visudo.

I think a better solution to this is to just change all mentions of sudo tailscale to sudo /opt/tailscale/tailscale. You only need to run once with sudo when first installing and very rarely after that, especially with auto update enabled.

If a different solution needs to happen, then adding a drop in to /etc/sudoers.d that overrides the secure_path is much cleaner but could potentially conflict with something else trying to modify secure_path.

You can also run the command after issuing "sudo -I" Once logged with root you can "tailscale update".

So if people follow the steps and are already in "sudo -I" they should be able to ignore the "sudo" part of the command. Then run the auto update this way and be done. :D

My solution, remove the sudo from the command. Add it into the main part of the instructions. Lzy Ez Pz.

Another alternative solutions is to use run0 tailscale update in the documentation replacing sudo. While sudo resets $PATH and can not find the tailscale binary in its non standard install location, run0 seems to work differently and resolves the path to the executable before elevating privileges.

The advantage of this solution is that it will work exactly as written in the documentation. The downside is that not everyone is familiar with run0 (this is my first time using it).

I also checked for doas but it is not installed on SteamOS.
