connect to playing audio

Seems this looks like a vu meter but is not connected to any playing audio. Is that correct? Any idea how to read actual playing volume, rather than the volume knob level. I'd like to visualize an mp3 audio stream for web radio to spot level issues while recording or loss of signal. Precision not important
