Basicist fix would be if, no image meets a threshold for being in focus, imagetools.max_images function returns the lowest index by default. This would be good for edges of the object (overhanging the build plate) but bad for areas in shadow on the object itself, where it would appear that there would be a big hole.
I went to try and implement basicist but am indecisive on how to patch it at the moment.
