Brandon Shelly

Hardware & PCB Design Engineer

I design, lay out, assemble, and bring up embedded hardware with a focus on power integrity, manufacturable PCB design, and debug-first development. My work centers on building boards that are not only electrically sound, but also practical to validate, troubleshoot, and document.

With over 8 years of hands-on electronics experience, including work in aerospace and defense-adjacent environments, I’ve developed a detail-driven approach to hardware that emphasizes clean power-up behavior, thoughtful layout, DFM-aware execution, and efficient bring-up.

My recent projects include custom embedded development boards built around modern microcontrollers, with emphasis on USB, power regulation, program/debug access, signal integrity, and testability.

🔧 CORE SKILLS

  • PCB design and layout
  • Embedded hardware development
  • Microcontroller support circuitry
  • Power electronics, including buck converters and LDOs
  • USB and mixed-signal routing
  • EMI-aware layout, grounding, and return path control
  • Hardware bring-up, bench validation, and debug
  • Test-point-driven design for efficient troubleshooting
  • Schematic capture and component selection
  • DFM / DFA-aware design for fabrication and assembly
  • BOM, CPL, Gerber, and manufacturing package generation
  • SMD soldering, rework, and micro-soldering
  • Technical documentation and hardware repo organization

🧠 DESIGN PHILOSOPHY

  • Good layout starts with current flow, return paths, and power integrity
  • Every board should be designed for bring-up and debug, not just schematic completion
  • Manufacturability matters just as much as electrical correctness
  • Clear labeling, accessible test points, and strong documentation reduce wasted time
  • Conservative, well-reasoned design choices build trust and reliability

FOCUS AREAS

  • Embedded microcontroller boards
  • Power regulation and support circuitry
  • Debuggable hardware platforms
  • Prototype-to-validation workflows
  • Portfolio-quality PCB projects with strong documentation
