feat(backup): exclude tables per backup configuration - #554
Conversation
Excluding log tables from a dump previously meant writing one --ignore-table=schema.table flag per schema/table pair into Extra Dump Flags. On a server with many schemas that list runs into thousands of characters, exceeds the field's 500-character limit, and has to be rewritten by hand whenever a schema is added. Excluded Tables takes bare table names and expands them per dump, so one entry covers every database on the server: - MySQL/MariaDB dumps each database separately, so names are qualified with the database being dumped (--ignore-table=datasoft.web_api_log). - PostgreSQL passes them unqualified (--exclude-table=web_api_log), which matches the table in every schema of the dumped database. Stored in extra_config alongside dump_flags rather than in a dedicated column, so it reaches remote agents (their job payload carries extra_config only) and shares buildExtraConfig() with the REST API. Names are restricted to unquoted identifier characters, which keeps them safe as command arguments on top of the existing escapeshellarg pass. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

pg_dump folds an unquoted --exclude-table pattern to lower case, so excluding WebLog skipped the lowercase weblog and kept "WebLog". Double-quoting the name makes it an exact match, like MySQL's --ignore-table.

Plain --exclude-table skips a partitioned table but still dumps its partitions, which is how log tables are often laid out. Both pg_dump clients the image ships (16 and 18) take --exclude-table-and-children. An invalid excluded table left the Dump Command Configuration section collapsed, hiding the error, and the zh_TW placeholder used an ideographic comma the parser does not split on.

The shared escape helper only served two callers and guarded against shapes buildExtraConfig never stores, so each handler now builds its own flags. The capability check moves to DatabaseType next to its siblings. The docs drop the worked examples and note that native PostgreSQL installs need pg_dump 16+ for --exclude-table-and-children.

Leaving tables out decides what a backup contains, so it belongs next to the database selection rather than in the server's dump command options. Per backup it also allows a light daily backup without log tables next to a full weekly one. The list now lives on backups.excluded_tables, behind an "Exclude tables" toggle in each backup card, and reaches the dump through BackupConfig for both the queue and agents. The feature is unreleased, so no stored server-level values need migrating.

Excluded tables are now set per backup configuration, under What to back up, so a daily backup can skip log tables while a weekly one keeps everything. |
Excluding log tables used to mean one
--ignore-table=db.tableflag per database in Extra Dump Flags, which quickly passes the field's 500 character limit and has to be updated whenever a database is added. Each backup configuration can now list tables to leave out by bare name, and the list is expanded for every database that backup dumps. Because it lives on the backup rather than the server, a daily backup can skip log tables while a weekly one keeps everything.Worth knowing:
--ignore-table=<db>.<table>. PostgreSQL gets--exclude-table-and-children="<table>", which also drops partitions and matches case-sensitively. That flag needs pg_dump 16 or later: the Docker image ships it, native installs must provide it.backups.excluded_tablescolumn.Closes #629
