Project Managers can declare and upload byte-exact UTF-8 Markdown guide originals as text/markdown/.md. The existing ART intake, setup-agent workspace, review-packet metadata, and PILOT-13 assigned-contributor REST/CLI paths carry the closed media type without parsing, rendering, rewriting, or creating a second storage path. The task-original download OpenAPI response advertises the same exact four supported media types.

The change adds linear revision 0027_markdown_guide_media after delivered 0026_task_guide_read. It locks the review-packet guide table, verifies the validated predecessor constraint, and adds only text/markdown; unsupported media remain refused. PDF, DOCX, and PPTX behavior remains covered.

Prior fully reviewed implementation and CI proof (before the subsequent main merge and documentation correction):

  • Base: 77d6db613ad2734e80106076586052132fa466cb
  • Head: 6256f239d2b613e790d24e58eac9cc62b9df675e
  • Tree: 441299c3920cc7488160aaaff5d47ab8f8aee7db
  • Independent architecture, reuse, security, QA, test-delta, documentation, product-operations, and CI-integrity review passed on this exact tree.

Current candidate: 61cf1326e99a1da780a7a383b345b9a92fadeeee, based on merged main ae0ed6c949776bb09db00c69ce1eeb95b4886e1b. The branch incorporates merged PILOT-14. The final documentation correction moves Markdown admission from completed work to the open-PR view and reconciles the four PILOT-14 roadmap claims with its completed merge. Markdown links, stale wording and Commitrail validation pass. Historical CI evidence below applies to its stated proof head; current-head hosted checks must pass before merge.

Validation and provenance:

  • The generated task-download OpenAPI regression passed on the reviewed implementation; removing the Markdown response entry makes that exact regression fail on the missing media type.
  • Stable semantic pdf/zip pytest IDs retain both binary-substitution assertions, make independent canonical collections identical, and keep the exact ZIP node reselectable. Removing those IDs reproduces timestamp-bearing selector drift and exit 4.
  • A prior fresh run correctly rejected a public-CLI fixture that selected Markdown bytes while declaring PDF. The reviewed fixture, exact upload transport matrix, command help, and CLI documentation now use the same closed Markdown media type. UUID selector semantics are unchanged.
  • Against PostgreSQL 16 and MinIO, the reviewed fixture source passed the real built-CLI public upload/read journey in 39.46s at Alembic head 0027_markdown_guide_media. The same Markdown bytes declared as PDF returned 422; the correct Markdown upload retained exact receipt digest/byte count; assigned Markdown and PDF downloads returned exact originals; unassigned, wrong-project, and revoked controls remained enforced. The isolated database, role, bucket, and prefix all cleaned.
  • Backend run 37908682835 at the predecessor repair proved the nested CLI and eight semantic lanes, then project B reached 1200.943 seconds after all 766 selected nodes completed with zero skips/deselections and complete PostgreSQL/MinIO cleanup. Its unbounded duration table had not completed.
  • The reviewed common CI repair preserves all nine lanes, services, node IDs, execution kinds, 1200-second cap, UUID/hash mechanisms, evidence, coverage, and fail-closed aggregate. The two measured broad project modules now use the same SHA-256 assignment across project A/C and none on B; the 8,812-node retained replay changed exactly 222 assignments in those modules and produced project counts 768/643/743. Current recursive collection contains 8,814 nodes, where the two added nodes are focused CI regressions. Ordinary/admin logs retain the 25 slowest phases.
  • Exact node-level timing replays forecast P15 A/B/C at about 694/1044/1029 seconds including observed overhead and the concurrent P14 tree at about 1011/974/837. These forecasts are lower-bound/variance-qualified and require fresh hosted validation; they are not performance claims.
  • Focused validation passed 62 catalogue/runner tests, 86 gate/record tests, Ruff, Markdown and Commitrail. Restoring the predecessor three-way assignment or unbounded duration output fails the exact focused regression.
  • On retained proof head 58f4c642b0329893d04ce7b84f8fed0d13454a5a, PostgreSQL 16/MinIO intake and recovery passed both variants in 51.17s with byte-exact provider readback and complete database/object cleanup. The PostgreSQL predecessor/head direct-write, one-head migration graph, and regenerated schema-fingerprint proof also passed there. The migration and provider implementation blobs remain compatible through this reviewed head.
  • Historical exact-head Backend run 37912970648, nested CLI, Agent Gates, MCP, all nine semantic lanes, and aggregate passed on the first attempt. The official validator independently accepted aggregate artifact 11608592842 for tested merge e091e1e310f8cffdd8877ee96ae04f75c0ac116e, whose tree matches the prior proof head 6256f239: 8,814 unique nodes completed, with zero skipped or deselected nodes and verified cleanup in every lane.

The CI repair changes test scheduling and diagnostics only, so it does not change product-roadmap capability state. HTML, docs sites, remote fetches, Markdown rendering, checker policy changes, deployment, and automatic issue closure remain outside this change.

Fixes #508.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Project guides can now include UTF-8 Markdown (.md) files alongside PDF, DOCX, and PPTX documents. Markdown files are preserved as uploaded and can be downloaded in their original form.
    • Markdown guides are supported in guide creation and upload workflows across the API and CLI.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Malformed UTF-8 and Markdown files containing NUL bytes are rejected rather than classified as valid Markdown.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

This change adds byte-preserved UTF-8 Markdown guide documents to backend and CLI declaration, upload, setup-agent read, and contributor download paths. It adds a database migration for Markdown media types. Hosted test lanes also change module assignment and pytest duration reporting.

Changes

Markdown guide documents

Layer / File(s) Summary
Media contract and format inspection
backend/alembic/..., backend/app/modules/artifacts/guide_formats.py, backend/app/modules/projects/api/guide_documents.py, backend/app/modules/reviews/packet/models.py, backend/app/modules/tasks/api/guide_documents.py, backend/app/modules/tasks/router.py, backend/tests/reviews/packet/*, backend/tests/test_guide_document_api_contract.py, backend/tests/test_guide_formats.py, backend/tests/test_alembic.py, backend/tests/conftest.py
The media contracts and migration allow text/markdown. Format inspection classifies valid UTF-8 Markdown and reports malformed input for invalid UTF-8 or NUL bytes. Tests cover unsupported HTML, mismatched payloads, and the migration constraint.
Upload custody and setup-agent reads
backend/tests/committed_guide_fixtures.py, backend/tests/test_guide_document_intake.py, backend/tests/tasks/guide_document_fixtures.py, backend/tests/test_guide_runtime_workspace.py, README.md, .commitrail/changes/*, docs/architecture_data_model.md, docs/decision_0003_project_guides_are_first_class.md, docs/decision_0011_submission_artifact_policy_drives_pre_submit.md, docs/glossary.md, docs/operations_backend_testing.md, docs/operations_project_operating_manual.md, docs/product_first_user_flows.md, docs/roadmap_status.md, docs/spec_artifact_storage_service.md, docs/spec_authorization_service.md, docs/template_submission_artifact_policy.md
Tests cover Markdown upload bytes and metadata in storage, and Markdown staging in the isolated workspace. Documentation describes Markdown as a byte-preserved original and excludes embedded document bodies and URL/repository ingestion.
Contributor reads and CLI downloads
backend/tests/tasks/test_guide_documents.py, cli/internal/api/*, cli/internal/command/guide_upload.go, cli/tests/integration/*guide*, cli/README.md
Contributor document reads include Markdown media types. The CLI accepts Markdown declarations and uses .md as the download extension. Tests cover exact downloaded bytes, canonical filenames, permissions, and rejection of a mismatched media type.
