First Light — README

A daily writing prompt skill for OpenClaw (also compatible with Claude Code). Delivers one prompt each morning from a curated collection across three categories: Intention Setting, Creative Writing, and Productivity.

Files

File Purpose
morning-prompts.md The prompt library (210 prompts across 3 categories)
SKILL.md Skill definition — read by the agent at runtime
cronjob-setup.md Agent instructions for configuring the cronjob

Quick start

Hand cronjob-setup.md to your OpenClaw agent (or paste it into Claude Code) and ask it to set up the First Light job. It will walk through the steps and ask you for your preferred schedule, model, and delivery channel before writing any config.

Notes to Human

Notification channel: This skill assumes a notification channel is already configured in OpenClaw. It doesn't set one up — that's a separate step done when you first configure your gateway. If you haven't done that yet, do it before running the cronjob setup. Supported channels typically include Matrix, Telegram, Discord, Slack, ntfy, and email — check your OpenClaw gateway config docs for the notify block.

Model choice: The cronjob setup will ask which model to use. This is a lightweight read-and-format task — any fast, cheap model available in your instance will work fine. Check your LiteLLM or provider config for the exact model string to use.

Schedule and timezone: The cron expression defaults to 0 7 * * * (7:00 AM server time). If your VPS is in UTC and you're not, the agent will convert your local time during setup — just tell it your timezone.

Delivery target: The channel and destination are embedded directly inside the job's message instruction — not as flags on the cron command. This is intentional: isolated agent sessions have no ambient delivery context, so the target must be part of the task itself. If you ever need to change your Matrix room, switch channels, or update the destination, you'll need to delete and recreate the cron job rather than editing a flag.

Message format: Each morning delivery opens with ☀️ Good morning!, presents the two Daily Anchor questions first (short-form answers), then the random writing prompt with a closing line encouraging the user to spend 10–15 minutes on it. The agent is instructed to vary the sign-off occasionally — things like "Take your time with this one" or "No need to finish it — just start" — so it doesn't feel mechanical over time.

Prompt rotation: The skill avoids repeating prompts within a 7-day window by scanning recent journal entries. This works even without OpenClaw memory enabled.

Changing the format: The delivery format, anchor questions, and sign-off guidance all live in SKILL.md. Edit that file to adjust tone, add anchors, or change the structure — no need to touch the cronjob config.

Companion skill: If you run into cron delivery failures, wrong execution times, or the agent calling unexpected tools during scheduled runs, install ez-cronjob alongside this skill. It documents the most common OpenClaw cron failure patterns and their fixes. The cronjob setup in this skill already follows its recommendations (isolated sessions, explicit timezones, --best-effort-deliver, --wake-mode now), but ez-cronjob gives your agent deeper troubleshooting context if something goes wrong.

Claude Code usage: Drop SKILL.md into your project and reference morning-prompts.md from the same directory. The cronjob setup won't apply directly, but you can trigger the skill manually and the delivery/selection logic still holds.
